Last weekend I did something I've never done before - attended a Hot Air Balloon festival.
I'd heard about a Hot Air Balloon Festival in Pittsfield NH a few weeks ago and thought it might be fun to attend. Now that I have my new camera (I love you A7R), I've been wanting to try it out in different situations, so when I thought about the potential for taking pictures at an event I'd never been to, or anything like it for that matter, I was even more excited to go.
I had a moment of photography clarity when I made the decision to go at the 5:30 AM launch instead of 5:30 PM (much to my lazy weekend-brain's dismay). The day before, I started thinking about the types of shots I could get with just bit of morning sun starting to break through the sky versus mid-evening shots when it would still be too early for any signs of sunset. My decision to make myself a little uncomfortable for a few hours by waking up 3 hours before I'm used to made me feel like I'm growing in my photography skills.
Going that early also meant less people, even though upon arrival, I was stunned by the hundreds of individuals who were walking around, clutching their coffees tightly while waiting for the balloons to rise into the air.
Looking through the shots I took when I got home, I was extremely pleased with how they came out, and ecstatic that I was able to attend this event ...even if it took longer to drive to the location than it did to take the pictures...still worth it.
My hope is to push myself with my photography, not just for my blog, but to encourage trying new things in life, like attending random events at all hours of the day.
While editing these shots, a song popped into my head that seemed fitting for this post...ever heard Lily Allen's Air Balloon (...you have now...)?
Any suggestions for interesting events I should attend/practice my photography at?
Maybe I should get up at 4am more often...these didn't come out half bad!
