I had the opportunity to collaborate with another artist on a photo shoot. This time with myself as the photographer, and them as the “model”. I’m really enjoying the chance to work on my photography and get to know other individuals better along the way!
This week, I shot with Gyspsysaint Cosplay for his Booker Dewitt costume from the game Bioshock Infinite. I even made a “sneak peak” video while we were shooting as a promo for this post. I’ve never made a video using apps on my phone, which was a lot of fun.
“Booker, Catch!”
While I’ve never played the game, Gypsysaint gave me a good idea of the feeling and storyline. I even analyzed the image of Booker from the game and forced Gypsysaint to let me throw some makeup on him. There are some perks to being your “model’s” little sister. One of those is convincing them to sit still so you can smudge strange things all over them – aka makeup. He did a great job for it being his first time having makeup applied and only flinched twice.
So far, both this and last time I played photographer, it has been incredibly cold outside. It definitely helps you move quickly, but it’s a bit disheartening if you want to try more ideas out. I think we found a happy medium of pushing ourselves longer than originally planned without freezing too much.
Staring contest
I had a lot of fun shooting this costume. I’ll admit, the difference between people coming across a shoot with a “fashion model” versus a shoot for a cosplay is pretty extreme. Most people just stop and stare for a while during a fashion shoot. Sometimes they’ll come up to the photographer and ask really obvious questions – like if they’re doing a photoshoot.
What I noticed with shooting someone dressed for a cosplay is that people are just as interested in seeing what is happening, but only for a brief amount of time. Of course, this is based off the only two shoots I’ve coordinated.
From a model’s standpoint, I know how hard it can be to stay focused on your shoot and not let strangers staring get to you. But I never thought about it being just as frustrating for the photographer as well. Especially when I had to move around to take shots, and people were driving past us going extra slow to see what was happening. Then I had to wait for them to pass before I could start shooting again.
All hiccups aside with cold weather and curious onlookers cramping our style, Gypsysaint did fantastic. Make sure to check out the other cosplays on his Facebook page and even more work on his Instagram!
